Winter Guard!

One of East Noble’s little-known winter activities is Winter Guard. Winter Guard is an extension of Color Guard from the marching band from the fall, which features the Color Guard performing routines to popular music and other musical selections. And just like marching band, Winter Guard is also a competitive activity, where each Guard competes for first place, and a spot at finals using a point-based system similar to the way marching band is judged, with break downs in various categories based off of form, dancing, flag work, and overall design of the show. Despite the little amount of light that is shown upon this activity, the Guard still has a very active force behind it, this year totaling out to sixteen members.

Winter Guard is a more artful activity than the conventional sports here at the high school. Using music and a theme, the directors and designers put together choreography, including dance and flag work. They also use drill, where the members move around during the show, to build a visual picture and interpretation of the music and theme. They may also use various types of props, anything from giant tires, car seats, and giant Styrofoam mushrooms, to coffee cups, aprons, and broken radios complete with the cord. All of these items are completely legal to use in Winter Guard, which amps up the amount of creativity in this activity.

The winter guard’s show this year is titled A Fairy Tale, featuring musical selections from the live action 2003 movie Peter Pan. The theme of the show revolves around the Winter Guard members portraying fairies, dancing and flittering about, complete with purple sequined fairy-like dresses and fairy wing flags. There are a total of five members on the weapon line and eleven flag members in this year’s winter guard. Some of them are Color Guard members from the fall, and others are from the marching horn line from the fall as well. Since this activity doesn’t require a musical talent, anybody can join!

The Winter Guard has six competitions this year, the first being Saturday, January 24th at Dekalb High School. All remaining competitions are on Saturdays, which are as follows: January 31st at Heritage High School, February 14th at Anderson High School, Februrary 21st at Bishop Dwenger High School, February 28th at Carroll High School, and Divisional Finals on March 14h at Mooresville High School.
