ASB - DeKalb Conference and Mismatched Ribbons

On Thursday (3.19), East Noble High School’s Academic Super Bowl team headed to DeKalb High School and competed with four other area high schools. Our teams faced off with Columbia City High School, Homestead High School, Carroll High School, and, of course, DeKalb High School at the Northeast Hoosier Conference. The theme of study this year is “the Grandeur that was Rome.”

The competition started off with the Math round, where our EN team took second place, earning themselves a ribbon. Carroll’s team took first and Columbia’s took third. Up next was English. East Noble did not place this round. Columbia took first, Carroll took second, and DeKalb took third. After English came the Science round. Once more, East Noble did not place. Homestead took first, Carroll second, and DeKalb third.

After Science came the Fine Arts round, which proved to be rather interesting when it came time to hand out ribbons. Carroll and East Noble had tied for third, even after the tie breaker. The second and third place ribbons were cut in half and taped back together, giving each participant half of both ribbons. This was, while nice, was actually a mistake as the teams had only tied for third and Columbia had taken second. Carroll and East Noble teams should have received whole third place ribbons, not the second place ribbons, and Columbia was supposed to receive the second place ribbons. While it was actually a mistake, the East Noble team thought it was rather nice and a bit funny. “They messed up, but we still got the coolest ribbon ever,” said Emily Savage, a senior, showing off her mismatched ribbon. DeKalb had taken first this round and had received their correct ribbons whole.

After the Fine Arts round was the Social Studies round, for which East Noble did not place. DeKalb placed first, Carroll placed second, and Columbia took third. The night finished off with the final round of interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary involves all five of the previous subjects and the teams consist of members of different subject squads. First was taken by DeKalb, second went to Columbia, and Carroll took third. After all the round were finished, the final scores were calculated and the overall winners were announced. The night was won by DeKalb, taking first, Carroll taking second, and Columbia City taking third. East Noble’s Academic Teams still have hopes of going to State this year despite the loss.
