Safe Driving Assembly

Did you know that it takes 4.6 seconds to send a text message in a car? Maybe you did, and maybe you didn’t. Did you know that over 100,000 car accidents are caused by that one message that takes 4.6 seconds to send? Most people don’t understand how important it is to NOT text while driving. Well, last Thursday we had a guest speaker come in and express the importance of safe driving. He showed us a video that viewed a few stories of people whose lives have been affected because of one text or phone call.

The first devastating story that was told was about an 8 year old boy, Xavier. Because of a woman who was not paying attention he now has no use of his legs. This woman had committed three crimes. She had ran a stop sign, she hit an innocent 8 year old boy, and she had been texting and driving. The text that she had sent was, “I’m on my way.”

Another story that was shared was titled “A Letter for Martin.” A young man named Chandler Gerber was texting and driving and killed 3 Amish kids when he hit their buggy. They were all boys of the ages 3, 9, and 17. While he was driving he sent the text, “I love you” to his wife.

These stories were made to have those who drive think. Think about the lives you’d ruin if you hit someone while texting and driving. Think about how terrible you would feel. Put down the phone and drive safely.
