Sweeney Todd plays at Fort Wayne Civic Theater

I had the pleasure of attending the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre’s production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. The tale of Sweeney Todd follows the story of a man seeking revenge after being framed and jailed. This revenge is followed out through Sweeney, a former barber, opening a barber shop and murdering his patrons! The tale turns a sickening turn when a friendship forms between him and Mrs. Lovett  that results in her using Swenney’s victims for her meat pies that she makes in the building below it!

Without spoiling anything, I will say that every plot twist left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly waiting to see the outcome. Despite the horrific plotline, the actors managed to balance this with spurts of comedy that alleviated the tension. From the moment the musical started with a funeral procession carrying a coffin, the tone of the musical was obviously set. Aside from the gruesome story, the chorus, props, set, and leads were absolutely wonderful. The choral blend and dynamic energy of the ensemble was very impressive, providing a chilling atmosphere throughout the musical. The special effects of smoke and blood were very well crafted and realistic, even from my faraway seat!

If you ever have the chance to see a show at the Fort Wayne Civic, don’t miss out!
