Spotlight Student: Alex Smith

Alex Smith, a junior here at ENHS, is a fantastic bowler. Just recently, she placed first in the state for the week of 11/8/14, and placed seventh in the state for the whole season. The match she played at was in Auburn; she struggled the first game and shot only a 138, but the second game she scored a 257, winning her the titles she received. Alex’s bowling career began the summer before her freshman year, where she subbed for a bowler on Shadow Bowl’s “The You” league. “Soon bowling became something more. Something that I knew I had the talent for,” says Alex. During her freshman year at East Noble, she placed first in the state, winning a $500 scholarship. Later that year she broke one of her fingers, damaging her so-far spectacular bowling career. “With that finger broken and still bowling, it was hard to get any rotation on my ball. I basically had to start all over!” she says. But the broken finger turned out to be just a minor setback, for Alex was back and bowling her best at the start of the next season. The accomplishments that her bowling team makes are extremely impressive considering the team is made up of novices, not professional bowlers. For having bowled for only a minute amount of time, Alex has become a valuable asset to the team and has bettered herself at the sport. “Bowling has brought me closer to my friends and has given me a reason to believe in myself.” Alex plans to continue bowling through high school, and would play for a college team if they would like her to, but mostly, Alex wants bowling to be something she does for fun. “I love bowling and I don’t think I could ever give it up.”
