School of Rock Premiere Review

On Saturday night, I tuned in to the premier of the new Nickelodeon show, School of Rock.

Based on the movie of the same name, the series follows a class of prep school students—Summer (Jade Pettyjohn), Zack (Lance Lim), Tomika (Breanna Yde), Freddy (Ricardo Hurtado), and Lawrence (Aidan Miner) — and their substitute teacher Dewey Finn (Tony Cavalero) as they attempt to make a rock band to win Battle of the Bands, all the while attempting to keep the band a secret from Principal Mullins (Jama Willamson).

The premier of this series showed what I would say an interesting attempt at making a TV series from a great Jack Black movie. However, the movie-to-TV show transition was not perfect. Though the overall plot from both was the same—including the scene from the movie where Dewey realizes the kids can play music—the characters’ personalities are different. The most notable example of this is Summer. In the movie, she’s a very smart and bossy girl who is against the idea of the band at the start. In the show, she is a girl who is head over heels in love with Zack and is completely on board with creating the band.

I rate this premier of School of Rock a 7.8/10, or C+. Though the humor was amusing and the plot had the right mixture of old and new components of the show, I was not impressed with the changes to the characters. However, I may be tuning in to future episodes to see how the series plays out.
