EN Presents “The Foreigner”

Over the past Thursday and weekend (2.19-2.21), East Noble Theater put on the “Foreigner,” a Broadway Comedy about a British man, Charlie Baker (Lucas Asher Graden), who’s terrified of talking, spending several days with his friend’s, Sargent “Froggy” LeSeuer (Jacob Nicholas Erne), friend, an old widow, Betty Meeks (Jenna Ann Boese), who always wanted to meet a “real foreigner.” During his stay, he gets to know Katherine Simms (Rachel Michelle Skurner) and her kid brother, Ellard Simms (Brian Phillip Tew). He also comes to conflict with Katherine’s fiancé, Reverend David Marshall Lee (Austin Allen Gulick) and his crude friend, Owen Musser (Joseph Brenton Vandiver). Over his three day stay, he continues to live under the guise that he can’t speak English, to the point of allowing Ellard to “teach” him English, becomes close with the residents, and “gaining a personality,” finding a new boldness to him he was pretty sure he didn’t have after his wife of twenty-seven years had twenty-three affairs because she found him boring. By the end of his stay, he’ll help repair a siblings bond, expose a liar, and protect the beloved house from the Ku Klux Klan.

The play is put on incredibly well by talented actors and actresses who take on their characters to well, that when one watches them, they don’t see the EN students, they see the characters. Each of the characters are well thought out with individual personalities the performers bring out. The character development is show skillfully. The jokes are always well hit and these students will have you in stitches throughout the show. The stage is beautifully done with many details to truly set the scene and immerse the audience in the story. Reilly Childers, a sophomore, had this to say, “It was really good. I would recommend it to anyone of any age.” Overall, the play was well put on and was one for the record books.
