Spelunky Review

(This is most definitely a biased review of one of my favorite platformers.)

Spelunky is what I call a rogue-type game. In other words if you make a mistake and screw up you cannot revert to ‘your last save’ so pretty much you die you start back where you started (spoiler: tunnel guy can help you get ahead if you get him to dig you a tunnel). DYING IS PART OF THIS GAME! It is extremely unlikely (if not impossible) to beat it on your first go, I for one had this game for 7 months playing on and off and still haven’t even got to the last level (between risks and just how easy it is to die and restart). Given how a rogue-type game works I always end up walking away from my computer after I die, but that only builds to the sense of accomplishment I get when I don’t end up screwing up. The gameplay and concept is amazingly thought out and complete, unlike a lot of newer games out there that I feel is missing a lot of content and was just left unfinished (aka Destiny didn’t meet the hype) another seemingly basic-looking game like Spelunky that was perfectly executed was that of Subset Games: Faster Then Light. These two games have two completely different concepts but both share the simplistic yet suiting artwork and rogue-like save system.
