The Last of Us Review

(Spoiler Warning)

The Last of Us is a game developed by Naughty Dog. Also known for the Uncharted series, the Crash Bandicoot series, and the Jak series.

It’s another one of the many zombie games that have flooded the market in recent years. This game, , puts a new spin on zombies. Instead of bites infecting people, inhaling “spores”, airborne particles that are produced from a plant or fungus, infects the individual. Killing the person, and reanimating the body into a killing machine. In my opinion, this is not only a more probable cause, but also a much more terrifying cause.

Lead character Joel, voiced by Troy Baker, is an older man who in the introduction to the game loses his daughter as they try to escape the beginning of the virus outbreak. That really is a shame because I liked his daughter, she was witty, sarcastic, and humorous. A comedic relief that this game needed, because it really likes to take itself seriously. A little too seriously.

Other main character Ellie, voiced by Ashley Johnson, is the replacement for Joel’s daughter… 20 years later. Which can be marked by the subtle time transition of “20 YEARS LATER” in bold print over a loading screen. She takes herself too seriously, and is going through that age where they feel the need to prove that they are more mature than what their age would suggest. She needs to be more mature in fact, because everything is about to get very ugly very fast.

After Joel and his “friend” Tess (come on we all wanted them together) “eliminate” someone, they meet the resistance groups “Queen”, Marlene. This group is called the Fireflies, they are fighting for freedom inside a city that offers protection from the vicious flesh-eating monsters outside. Because we’re so oppressed, man.

This is where the real story begins. After what I consider to be intro sequence number 2. After Ellie is introduced and they go trooping across the USA, and meet all sorts of humans. The Last of Us? I think not.

Overall not a bad game, okay story, sketchy controls, sketchy battle mechanics.

7 ½ stars, because I’m cynical.
