Between the dress-up days and the after-school events that took place during homecoming week, it was par for the course that the homecoming football game was equally as crazy. So crazy, in fact, that it took until Saturday morning to actually finish the game. East Noble was defeated by the Leo Lions 35-14, but the Knights far from laid down during the game.

The rain let up as the pregame rituals began, but just after the game started, it picked back up and drizzled on the players and the crowd for the majority of the first half. The Lions were able to make a few large-yardage plays in the first half to outscore the Knights 21-0. The Lions dominated ball possession in the first half, and what little possession the Knights had was thwarted by an impressive Lions defense.

During halftime, lightning visible in the north slowly crept its way over the stadium until finally the game had to be delayed for half an hour. Then the rain came down and the wind joined it until eventually the game was forced to be postponed due to flooding and lightning.

The game resumed at 10:00 AM on Saturday and the Knights left it all on the field in the second half. David Salazar, a senior, scored two unanswered rushing touchdowns to tighten the lead to 21-14 early in the fourth quarter. The Lions countered the Knights’ momentum by scoring a pair of touchdowns themselves to lock the game up and hand the Knights their first loss of the year.

Leading for the Knights in passing was sophomore Andrew McCormick, going 16-35 and passing for 166 yards. Junior Dylan Hunley was his favorite target on the game leading Knights’ receivers with 7 receptions for 75 yards while senior Jake Torrie caught 5 of his own for 33 yards. Doing the bulk of the running for the Knights was junior Charlie Miller, gaining 77 yards on 11 carries, but Salazar did the scoring with his two touchdowns, also rushing for 39 yards on 4 carries.

While the end result did not favor the Knights, they fought hard against a tough team and all of Knight Nation is proud of the way they played and handled the adverse circumstances that came their way. The Knights fell to 4-1 on the season and will be traveling to Norwell to play on Friday, September 25.
