Team USA’s Matthew Antoine mounts his sled in his bronze medal effort during the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The Sochi Olympics 2014 have been going on since February 7th, and many athletes have competed in their sports at the Games, and some have won medals for themselves and their country, leaving their marks on their sports. These are the results of Skeleton and Luge.

First, descriptions of the sports:

Skeleton takes place on the same track, also called a “run”, as a bobsleigh. It starts with a running “push” phase, after which the athlete jumps onto the sled and head downs the track. The athletes lie straight, chest on the sled, and facing downhill, arms at their sides. They steer the skeleton with movements of their body. The winner is the one with the shortest overall time.

Luge, considered to be one of the most dangers Winter Olympic sports, involves sliding down hill at high speeds on a single or two-person sled on a special track made of ice that’s been artificially frozen. The athletes start in a sitting position, and after they push off, they lie down on their back with their feet stretched out in front of them. The athletes steer the sled by moving their center of gravity. The winner is the one with the shortest overall time. The sleds can reach speeds over 140 km/h, or about 87 mph, during a run.
