Sochi Winter Olympics Skiing Results

Alpine Skiing

On Monday February 10, the Alpine Skiing Ladies’ Super-Combined was held. This event is an all-around test of getting from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill quickly, and with the most precise turns around obstacles (slalom). Alpine Skiing has been a part of the Winter Olympics since 1936.

Women’s Downhill and Super-Combined

The results are in and Maria Hoefl-Reisch, 29, of Germany completed the downhill portion in 1:43.720 and completed slalom with 50.90, coming to a total of 2:34.620. Austria’s Nicole Hosp, 30, took silver with 1:43.950 Downhill and 51.07 Slalom, a total of 2:35.020. The United States’ Julia Mancuso, 29, took bronze with 1:42.680 Downhill, 52.47 Slalom, and a total of 2:35.150.

Men’s Downhill

As for the Men’s Downhill event, Austrian Matthias Mayer, 23, took the gold with a 2:06.23. Italian Christof Innerhofer, 29, took silver with 2:06.29, and Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud, 28, took bronze with 2:06.33.

Men’s Super-Combined

Sandro Villetta, 28, of Switzerland took the gold with a total score of 2:45.20. Croatian Ivica Kostelic received the Silver Medal with a total score of 2:45.54, and Italian Chrisof Innerhofer receive the Bronze Medal with his total score of 2:45.67.

Freestyle Skiing

The Freestyle Skiing Event is a fairly new event; it has only been around since the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. It consists of jumps, turns, and acrobatic tricks. Some freestyle skiers jump as high as a six-story building. The proper position for a freestyle skier is with the upper body facing upright, with the head looking forward. The skier absorbs the impact from jumps by bending the knees and hips.

Women’s Freestyle Skiing Slopestyle

In the Women’s Freestyle Skiing Slopestyle event, that took place on February 11, 2014, Dara Howell, 19, of Canada took the gold with a best score of 94.2. Devin Logan, 20, of the United States took silver with a best score of 85.4. Kim Lamarre, 25, took the bronze with a best score of 85.

Men’s Freestyle Skiing Slopestyle

The United States took all three medals in this event! Joss Christensen, 22, took the gold with a best score of 95.8. Gus Kentworthy, 21, took the silver with a best score of 93.6. Nicholas Goepper, 19, took bronze with a best score of 92.4.

Men’s Moguls

The word mogul comes from the Austrian word “mugel,” which means mound or small hill. Alex Bilodeau, 26, of Canada took the gold in Men’s Moguls Freestyle skiing with a score of 26.31. Another Canadian, Mikael Kingsbury, 21, took silver with a score of 24.71. Russian Alexandr Smyschlyaev, 26, (how about that last name!) took bronze with a score of 24.34.

Women’s Moguls

Justine Dufour-Lapointe, 19, of Canada took the gold with a score of 22.44. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, 20, of Canada (yes they’re sisters!) took silver with a score of 21.66. Hannah Kearney from the United States took the bronze with a score of 21.49.

Ski Jumping

Skiers jump farther than a football pitch and reach speeds up to 60 mph all while maintaining their balance. Points are awarded for distance and style.

Men’s Ski Jumping Normal Hill

Polish 26-year-old, Komil Stoch, took the gold with a jump distance of 103.5 meters (Can you even imagine?) with 136 points and a total score of 278. Slovenian, 21-year-old, Peter Prevc took silver with a distance of 99 meters, 130.5 points, and with a total score of 265.3. Norwegian 31-year-old, Anders Bardal, took bronze with a distance of 98.5 meters, 128.3 points, and a total score of 264.1.

Women’s Ski Jumping Normal Hill

German 22-year-old, Carina Vogt, took the gold with a distance of 97.5 meters, 120.6 points, and total score of 247.4. Austrian 30-year-old, Daniela Iraschko-Stolz , took silver with a distance of 104.5 meters, 126 points, and a total score of 246.2. French 18-year-old, Coline Mattel, took bronze with a distance of 97.5 meters, 119.5 points, and a total score of 245.2.
