Sing Movie Review

In a world of anthropomorphic animals, a koala bear named Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) owns a theatre that has fallen onto hard times. To try to save it, he decides to hold a singing competition. The contestants include housewife Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), an arrogant mouse named Mike (Seth MacFarlane), punk rocker porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson), mobster son Johnny (Taron Egerton), and shy elephant Meena (Tori Kelly). But as the stakes get higher and things go from bad to worse, can Buster pull the acts together and save the theater?

There were some clear problems with the movie, most notably with the plot. While the plot was pretty straightforward, there were far too many subplots, as the characters were all dealing with their own separate problems. A fix to this could’ve been more interaction between the characters on their problems and facing them together as a group rather than as individuals. The characters were developed pretty well, but again, I wish there had been more interaction between them.

The animation was pretty great. I have seen previous work from Illumination, such as their Despicable Me franchise, and they do a pretty decent job. Sing was just another movie that was animated well, especially since it was yet another movie starting anthropomorphic animals.

Of course, the best part of the movie was, of course, the music. This film not only included classic songs that everyone knows, such as Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” and Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing,” but new original songs as well, such as Stevie Wonder’s “Faith” and Scarlett Johansson’s “Set It All Free.”

Overall, I give the movie an 8.5/10 or B rating for its patchwork of plots and great music.
