X-Men: Apocalypse

The first mutant awakens to end the world in the latest installment in the X-Men film franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse.

For thousands of years, the mutant known as Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) has slumbered after a betrayal from his followers. Upon awakening in 1983, he is disgusted by how humans live now and plans to exterminate them. Realizing the danger Apocalypse poses to the world, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) must lead a team of young X-Men to fight him and his Four Horsemen.

The first thing I would like to acknowledge is the cast. James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert), Lucas Till (Havok), Josh Helman (William Stryker), Even Peters (Quicksilver), and Oscar Isaac, who, as mentioned previously, portrays the villain, Apocalypse. Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandria Shipp, and Kodi Smit-McPhee play younger versions of the mutants Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Nightcrawler respectively while Olivia Munn and Ben Hardy play Psylocke and Angel res. Lana Condor also makes her acting debut as Jubilee. Finally, Hugh Jackman makes an uncredited appearance as Wolverine.

The plotline of this movie was a little hard to follow, especially at the beginning, but it became a little clearer at the mid-point of the film. Even still, the plotline was the movie’s greatest flaw.

The special effects were pretty good as well. There were enough explosions to make it a good movie, and few enough to make sure everyone knew it was not a Michael Bay Film.

Lastly, I want to point out the post-credits scene. I won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers, but it definitely makes me excited for future installments in the X-Men fllm franchise, especially since it sort of reveals that another famous X-Men villain will be coming.

Overall, I give this movie a 8.2/10, or a B-. It serves as a good ending to this latest trilogy of X-Men films, but it is a little hard to follow. Still, I do encourage X-Men fans to watch it if they have not yet.
