Players get the chance to unravel an exciting new adventure in one of Nintendo’s latest masterpieces: Yoshi’s Woolly World. This Wii U title, which was released on October 16 of this year, stars Nintendo’s iconic green dinosaur, Yoshi, and follows his journey through a wacky world in which everything is made out of yarn—including himself! Thanks to its detailed graphics and its unendingly creative puzzles, Yoshi’s Woolly World is a game that can entertain younger and older generations alike.

Siblings and friends can play side-by-side through dozens of levels and help each other solve problems, swallow up enemies, and throw balls of yarn to create platforms. Players are challenged to recover five pieces of Wonder Wool from each level in order to create new yarn Yoshis. Some of the pieces of Wonder Wool are easy to locate while others are hidden cleverly behind walls or inside warp pipes. Players must think outside the box in their endeavors to locate the Wonder Wool and other collectibles.

Good-Feel, the game’s developer, certainly delivers a solid gameplay experience. Every element in the game resembles a carefully hand-crafted yarn creation. Enemies unravel as Yoshi gobbles them up. The ground’s fabrics slump under Yoshi’s weight, and it is not uncommon to stumble over a button or sewing needle when exploring a level. The background is often a simplistic curtain with smiling clouds sewn on its surface, and it’s the subtle details like these that really bring the game to life. For the first time, players can interact with the unique mechanics of a yarn-based game.

Yoshi’s Woolly World offers more than a unique playing experience, though. Its levels, enemies, and sound effects are strikingly similar to those found in Yoshi’s Story, a popular game that was released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. Older generations who grew up playing that game are likely to find Yoshi’s Woolly World delightfully nostalgic, making it the perfect game for two generations of Nintendo fans to explore together. The only downside to this, however, is that no more than two players can enjoy the game at a time.

There are a few other minor drawbacks to be noted. Some levels may be difficult for young children while others may be too simplistic for adults. Furthermore, any adult or teenager who did not grow up playing Yoshi’s Story or other Nintendo titles will probably not enjoy this game due to its childish nature.

Fortunately the pros outweigh the cons by a landslide. Yoshi’s Woolly World enhances problem-solving skills and is child-friendly. It is also compatible with Nintendo’s new line of amiibo. Amiibo are figurines of video game characters that can be used with games to do a variety of tasks. In Yoshi’s Woolly World an amiibo can unlock a new Yoshi that resembles the amiibo’s video game character. A special line of knitted Yoshi amiibo have also been produced by Nintendo recently. Some copies of the game are actually sold with one in a boxed set. These special Yoshi amiibo not only serve as great children’s toys; they also lend a hand to anyone who has to play the game alone. They can be used to provide a lonely player with a helpful Yoshi that accompanies the player in every level.

Yoshi’s Woolly World is far more inventive and witty than a majority of its rivals in the video game industry. It is bursting at the seams with creativity (sometimes literally). Its success can easily be compared to other prestigious Wii U titles like Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Mario 3D World, which will be remembered for years to come. As the holiday season continues, it might be a good idea to pick up a copy of Yoshi’s Woolly World. It could make the perfect gift for a friend or family member—or just yourself.
