The LEGO Movie Review

Everything is awesome! That’s pretty much a summary of The Lego Movie where everything from the animation, to the story, voice-acting, and humor truly is awesome. I was smiling like an idiot the entire time I was watching this movie because it was great to see one of my favorite childhood toys on the big screen making me laugh more than any comedy I’ve seen in a long time.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), The Lego Movie is an incredibly creative, adorably funny, star-studded piece of work, featuring the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Liam Neeson, Will Farrell, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Channing Tatum, Allison Brie, Will Forte, Jonah Hill, and Will Arnett, just to name a few.

Meet Emmet Brickowski (Pratt), an ordinary LEGO construction worker that follows all the instructions for blending in in the LEGO world. Emmet fits in so well, that people don’t even notice him anymore. So when Emmet is mistaken to be the amazing MasterBuilder, he takes the chance to be someone different and is recruited to take part in a quest to stop the evil Lord Business from gluing the whole LEGO universe together. Emmet learns to face his fears and the most unoriginal of the LEGO people becomes the most special person in the whole LEGO universe.

One of the most amazing parts of this movie is the animation. Everything, absolutely, everything, is made of LEGOs. They didn’t cheat on a single thing. Everything including the water, fire, and explosions is made of LEGOs. The attention to detail is astonishing and all the animator’s hard work really pays off when you lay your eyes upon an entire world made of little plastic pieces.

The voice-acting is also something to be proud of because even though the characters are made of plastic, they are endearing and become real people in your mind. Chris Pratt in my opinion was the ideal voice for Emmet: a cheerful, goofy, charismatic individual that you love from the very beginning. Will Ferrell makes a hilariously evil villain by the name of Lord Business but even his performance is overshadowed by Liam Neeson’s two-faced Good Cop/Bad Cop and Will Arnett’s self-absorbed Batman.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film from beginning to end. The whole movie is an explosion of eye-catching, colorful action and the quick humor and ridiculous characters will win you over very quickly. It also has a lot of touching moments that make you want to go home and build LEGO cities with your family while singing “Everything is Awesome!

I haven’t laughed this hard at a movie in a long time. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie. Take the whole family with you too.

I give it an 8/10.
