Preparing for a Blizzard

Preparing+for+a+Blizzard
Taylor Lehman

In the midst of a system that could produce “blizzard conditions” and 10-12 inches over the next couple days, it is necessary to prepare for a severe winter storm.

First, everyone must understand the conditions of the system and possible outcomes. During today’s system, a system of heavy snowfall, high winds, and cold temperatures, it is possible that there will be a loss of power, slick roads, and drifting snow. In case those predictions become reality, here are a few tips on how to weather the “blizzard”:

Maintain a Healthy Food Supply: It is customary to stock your house with a 3-day supply of food and water, making sure that the food is easy to prepare and the water is already extracted from the tap.

Flashlight: A flashlight is necessary during the night hours if there is a loss of electricity.

Battery-Powered/Hand-Cranked Radio with extra batteries: A radio will be needed if the power is out and other devices are not available so that everyone can be aware of other emergency information if necessary.

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices are the most popular source of information, but they need to be fully charged if/when the power goes out.

First Aid Kit: A first aid kit is needed in case someone is injured and no one outside of the home can help.

Medications: A 3-day supply of necessary medications is also recommended.

Blankets, Coats, Other Winter Clothing: Everyone needs to keep warm during a snowstorm, especially during nighttime hours, but when the power is out, so is the heat.

Extra Money: in case of an emergency

Baby/Pet Supplies: Be sure to keep the necessities for the dependent members of the family before those of the independent members.

Alternate Sources of Heat: Along with winter clothing, everyone needs to stay warm when the heat is out, so fireplaces, portable heaters, and hand warmers are all considered alternate sources of heat. Be careful where these sources are placed, though, because no one wants a fire when they are snowed in.

Keep a Full Tank of Gas in All Vehicles: While the blizzard is wreaking havoc outside, all vehicles are feeling the cold temperatures and snow also. A full tank of gas prevents the fuel lines from freezing and breaking, so when the storm is over and all vehicles are unburied, there won’t be any expensive consequences.

Stay Off of the Roads: When snow is piling up and drifting outside, it is not an intelligent idea to drive out there with it. Drivers should consider finding a hotel nearby to spend a night or two. There could be an accident, and people could be hurt. Besides, who wants to be out there anyway?

Keep Snow Removal Equipment at Hand: Salt, shovels, and snowblowers are all fantastic inventions for removing snow. Use them! Snow could build up at the door or any other places outside of the house, keeping the residents trapped for longer than they need to be.

Whether or not these tips are mandatory for today’s storm, it is important to keep them in mind during the winter, in case there is a legitimate blizzard in the future. Good luck weathering the storm out there today, and keep warm!
