October Movies 2013

Happy October, everyone! There are a lot of exciting films premiering nationwide this month and I will be at the movies very often. Take a look at this month’s new films and find out if you will too.

October 4:

Gravity: Get ready to be blown away by this bone-chiller that is truly out of this world (Sorry, I had to)! A medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) and an astronaut (George Clooney) fight for survival after an accident strands them in the unforgiving abyss of outer space. Gravity boasts spectacular special effects and two very talented A-List actors. This film is generating an enormous amount of Oscar buzz and James Cameron calls it “The best space film ever done.”

Gravity is rated PG-13

Runner Runner: Justin Timberlake stars as a college graduate that goes to Costa Rica to meet the man he believes cheated him on an online gambling site. Ben Affleck costars as the cunning Internet gambling mogul that cheated Justin worse than Miley Cyrus did at the VMAs. This movie currently has a score of 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from 1,292 users. It looks like a lot of fun, but don’t expect a life-changing work of art.

Runner Runner is rated R.

October 11:

Romeo and Juliet: This timeless story written by William Shakespeare is being adapted for the big screen…again. It stars Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as the star-crossed lovers. After reading the actual play and seeing two film adaptions and countless parodies, I don’t really have a burning desire to see this remake. Although Hailee in the title role is an interesting choice, this is her first major film role since 2010’s True Grit, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

Romeo and Juliet is rated PG-13.

Captain Phillips: Hooray for Tom Hanks! Hanks never seems to disappoint, so let’s hope he keeps up that reputation when he stars as Richard Phillips, the captain of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama. The ship was attacked by Somali pirates in 2009, the first American cargo ship to be attacked in over 200 years. Paul Greengrass, the director, casted four Somali men that had never acted before for the movie. This should make for a very interesting thriller.

Captain Phillips is rated PG-13.

October 19:

Carrie: This is the second remake of Stephen King’s novel and stars Chloe Grace Mortez as the titular character, a troubled teenage girl with telekinetic powers that wreaks havoc at her high school prom after a cruel prank. It also costars Julianne Moore as Carrie’s deeply religious mother. This will be a great Halloween time movie to watch, especially if you enjoyed the original adaption. Mortez and Moore are both talented actresses and by the looks of this film I think we can expect a good, frightening picture.

Carrie is rated R.

Escape Plan: Stallone and Schwarzenegger are at it again in this action flick. Stallone plays an expert on structural security. He is framed for a crime he obviously didn’t commit and is placed in; you guessed it, a prison he designed. Schwarzenegger is a fellow convict in the prison and teams up with Stallone to figure out who framed him and why, and they are determined to escape this inescapable prison. This movie looks like a good time and the story looks more original and put-together than Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s more recent film adventures like Bullet to the Head and The Last Stand.

Escape Plan is rated R.

The Fifth Estate: Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and David Bruhl, this film is about the news-leaking website, WikiLeaks. Cumberbatch plays Julian Assange, the founder of the website and sports a rather frightening head of white-blond hair. This film is already seen as one-sided and controversial, and only has a score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Fifth Estate is rated R for language and some violence.

October 25:

The Counselor: This movie has a lot of great things going for it. Not only does it star Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Brad Pitt, it was also written by Cormac McCarthy (the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Road and No Country for Old Men), and is directed Ridley Scott who has also directed movies like Alien (1977), Blade Runner (1982), Gladiator (2000), and Prometheus (2012). Fassbender plays a lawyer that tries to get into the drug business without getting in over his head and let’s just say it backfires. This film looks dark, exciting, and grisly.

The Counselor is rated R.
