Monday, November 2nd, the East Noble Spell Bowl team traveled to Northridge High School to compete in the Area Competition. For the Knights, this score would determine not only if they advanced to state, but their placement in the Northeast 8 conference. With a score of 60, the Spelling Knights qualified for state, winning first in their class at the competition, and took second place in the NE8 conference.

Junior newcomers Anthony Phan and Aubrey Zahner scored a two and five respectively. Juniors Lief Brandgard and Michael Lehman, along with sophomore Abby Vorndran, each spelled five words correctly. Senior Lucas Graden scored a six, while junior Meghann McCoy scored a seven. Senior Jenna Boese and senior co-captain Alyssa Yoquelet each spelled eight words correctly, earning near-perfect ribbons. Senior co-captain Phillip Phan led the team, scoring the only perfect score of nine for the Knight Spellers that evening.

East Noble finished 7th in their class out of the ten state-qualifying teams, and 12th in the state out of 30 total teams. Other class 1 qualifiers are as follows: Penn, Martinsville, Terre Haute South Vigo, Fishers, Columbia City, Pike, Hamilton Southeastern, Homestead, and Plymouth.

Due to discrepancies at the official NE8 conference meet earlier in the season, the Area competition also determined who would be conference champions and take the following places. Columbia City took first place with a score of 64, East Noble second with a score of 60, Leo third with a score of 34, Bellmont fourth with a score of 18, and DeKalb fifth with a score of 15. Huntington North, New Haven, and Norwell, the remaining schools in the NE8, did not participate.

Saturday, November 14th, the Knight Spellers will make the trip to Purdue University to compete in the State Spell Bowl Competition. Best of luck to all!
