“Why were a bunch of students standing next to the flagpole Wednesday morning?”

Excellent question! A number of students showed up to the school a bit early last Wednesday morning—7:10! They were participating in a student-led event called See You at the Pole. Now you’re probably wondering: Wait, what’s See You at the Pole? Well, I’m glad you asked!

In early 1990 a group of students went to a youth retreat, and they felt led to pray for their fellow students at their respective schools. The students came home from the youth retreat, and, not knowing where to go, they began meeting at flagpoles and praying for the students and faculty of their high schools.

The students began spreading the word about what they were doing, and before they knew it tens of thousands of students were meeting at flagpoles all over the country and praying for their high schools. Students began organizing their own day of prayer, and there was no stopping the movement. The following year, in 1991, an estimated one million students met at flagpoles all over the country. They prayed for their fellow students, teachers, administrators, and the like.

The movement wasn’t taking place just in the US. Missionaries have spread the word of See You at the Pole to countries all over the world. As of now, approximately three million students participate in this student-led event every year in the middle/end of September. What started as just a few students feeling led to pray evolved into a global movement.
