Have you been wondering why packing tape sculptures shaped like people suddenly appeared in various places around the school?  Have you wondered how the students made them?  The packing tape sculptures are a product of Miss Vanderkolk’s 4th period sculpture class’ latest project to end the trimester.  The project is based off of Mark Jenkins’ contemporary art style of making packing tape sculptures in the streets of various cities.

The students split up into groups of 2 or 3 people and proceeded to choose a theme, pose, and a place for it to go in the school.  Different themes for projects included Superman, a magician, a representation of the classic “selfie”, and more.

“The students enjoyed the challenge of using this unorthodox material for their sculpture,” said Miss Vanderkolk, “they also enjoyed working in groups to come up with a collaborative idea for the best sculpture possible.”

To make the actual sculpture, one student posed in the position they wanted their sculpture to be in while the other student wrapped them in packing tape, with the sticky side out of course.  After being wrapped in 3 layers of tape, they carefully removed the tape so it was still intact the way it was on the model student.

“The students really showed their creativity by posing their sculptures in an active pose, which really does make it harder to sculpt than just having the person stand upright with their arms at their sides,” explained Miss Vanderkolk.

Some groups, such as the group making the magician, chose to enhance their project by bringing in different materials such as balloons and newspapers to help make their project stand out more in the hallways.

The next time you’re walking in the hallways of East Noble High School, take the time to look around and enjoy the very unique and outstanding artwork decorating them.
