Where Are They Now?: Jordan McCarty

East Noble High School is a place not only to learn as a student, but to grow as an individual. East Noble  fosters an environment in which students can explore their interests and talents, and has a faculty that consistently encourages students to do so. This is evidenced not only in what our current students are doing in the school and community, but ever more so in what our East Noble alumni are doing in their new schools and communities.

Jordan McCarty, a 2014 East Noble graduate, can certainly attest to this. Since her graduation, McCarty  has been attending Indiana University to pursue a career in arts management with a focus in music. Along with her schooling, McCarty was given a phenomenal opportunity to develop her skills in arts management. As of this summer, McCarty has been interning as Event Associate at the Buskirk Chumley Theatre in downtown Bloomington. Her various responsibilities include working in the box office, running concessions for events, and managing the house (theatre) during an event.

The Buskirk Chumley theatre is 93 years old, and has been the host for many well-known and talented acts and events. During McCarty’s internship there, she has had the opportunity to work alongside some of these gifted individuals. Some acts she has worked with include The Bacon Brothers, YouTube/American Idol/MTV star Todrick Hall’s TODDLERZ BALL, and even the Legendary Blues icon Booker T. Jones.

McCarty’s role at the theatre doesn’t stop at managing events. She has been given the opportunity to work on a marketing project for a show entitled “Black Violin.” This show consists of two African-American men playing today’s hits on their violins. This group has had a successful running, selling out their show at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway, as well as having a successful show at the Harlem Apollo Theatre. “Black Violin” also played with Alicia Keyes at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards and on VH-1’s Unplugged with Patrick Stump of Gym Class Heroes and Fall Out Boy.

Being an East Noble alum, as well as a past member of the Knightly Scroll staff, McCarty can’t help but credit EN for some of her skills and attributes. When asked how her experiences at East Noble prepared her for the internship at the Buskirk Chumley Theatre, she reflected on her time on the Munk Stage and in show choir. “I am able to work the stage unlike any of my co-workers.” She credits teachers such as Mr. Munk and Mr. Mettert for preparing her for a career in arts management, whatever the situation may be.

McCarty is an excellent example of what can happen when a student is encouraged and pushed to pursue their desires. The opportunities available at East Noble and beyond are astounding, and as evidenced here are certainly attainable.
