A Unique Twist to Social Media

Are you a creative person who enjoys making media mashups but you don’t have any content? How about just someone who enjoys posting a picture or video on social media about an activity that you partook in? If you said “yes” to one or both of those questions, then Meographs’ new app, Trio, is the right app for you!

Trio is an app that allows the user to make a media mashup, known as a trio, comprised of a combination of pictures, videos and gifs that lasts up to 30 seconds. After the mashup is arranged, there is an option to add almost any song that the user feels fits the mashup, even the most popular music today. There is no limit to how many different pieces of media can be used to make the mashup, so many pictures, videos and gifs can be shared at the same time. What makes the app truly unique, though, is that there is already content in the app that trios can be made of so that the user can make a unique trio, but out of media that already exists, because not everybody is going to have content at the ready all of the time.

“We asked ourselves, ‘How can we make media creation better?’” explained co-founder of Meographs and one of the creators of Trio, Misha Leybovich. “The idea for Trio was an evolution of many different ideas, and we found that it’s tough for people to make mashups using their own content, so we decided to provide some for them if they wished to use it so that they can be creative at any time.”

The goal for the app is to eventually be the top mashup app nationally and to coexist with apps such as Instagram and Vine, not to add competition to them. Leybovich explained that the company realizes that Trio, like all other apps, is a good fit for some people, and for others it’s not, and that’s okay. Meographs wants to reach out to the population who uses social media such as Instagram and Vine, which happens to be primarily high school and college students, so the app’s interface is suited to that preference with a unique look that catches the eye.

With the provided content on the app, legality of use of the content is sometimes a concern. This is not a concern for the Meographs team, though. They get their content from the public APIs of companies such as Instagram, iTunes and Giffy, which are databases of content that are available for companies like Meographs who wish to make apps and incorporate the media contained in the APIs. While choosing a song to add to a trio, the user can see all of the information such as who made the song, where it came from and the link to the song on iTunes. The percentage of people who buy songs after they find them on Trio is 35 percent, which turns into revenue for iTunes for the song purchase. Companies encourage the use of APRs for this reason.

Not only can the user make a trio and post it on the app, but they can share it to Facebook or Twitter straight from the app itself. Trios can also be saved to the mobile device it is made on so that the user can always see it in their gallery.

Co-Founders Leybovich and Clay Garrett decided to make a media app around 10 years ago and founded Meographs three years ago. Trio has been in the making for one year.

“I wish it was a ‘Eureka!’ moment,” Leybovich said, “but it has rather been an evolution over time. Since we’re just starting, we know that everyone is just getting used to making Trios, but the Trios will get really good once we get millions of users to start using the app and everyone starts to figure out the app. The key to being successful is to have the intelligent, have the work ethic and have the humility to realize that not every idea is a good idea. But most of all, the key to being successful is the time, because if there is no time for ideas to be developed and tested, then there is no success.”

Once the app gains more steam, Leybovich explained that the team is going to improve Trio so that the Trios that are shown to each user are personalized based on what the user has previously posted and what they previously “liked.”

“We want to show the Trios that we think each user would like best and show them. Then there’s the question of whether the quality of the trio would be more important than the time that the trio has been posted, because nobody wants to see old trios, but they do want to see quality ones,” explained Leybovich. “We still have improvements that we want to make to our app, but those will come when the input of the users is given.”

As of now, Trio is only available on Apple’s App Store so that the makers would be able to assess the pros and cons of the app before designing an app for the Google Play Store for Android devices. Meographs’ goal is to have the Android app up and running by the end of this year. More information about the app and how to download it can be found at www.trioapp.co.
