Week in History: March 17 – 21

March 17, 461 – St. Patrick dies. He was a Christian missionary, apostle, and a bishop in Ireland. He came to Ireland from Great Britain in his teenage years after he was captured and enslaved at 16. This day is now remembered as St. Patricks’ Day.

March 18, 1766 – On this day in history, Parliament repealed the Stamp act in the American colonies after fourth months of protest by Americans. The Stamp Act passed a tax on all official documents, requiring a British stamp to be purchased for each one. It was meant to help a standing army in America for the British, but the Americans protested at “taxation without representation”.

March 19, 2003 – On this day in history, the war of Iraq began. America and coalition forces began fighting in Baghdad. Hours after the fighting began President George W. Bush released this statement: “”At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.”

March 20, 1345 – On this day in history, one of the deadliest epidemic diseases was, allegedly, unleashed upon the world. The Black Death or bubonic plague was caused by the fleas with the bacteria inside them biting other mammals. When those mammals died the bacteria spread to other mammals. The Black Death would eventually sweep through the western hemisphere killing an estimated 25 million people.

March 21, 1980 – On this day in history, the United States made it public that for the first time ever – and so far the only time – the United States would boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Russia. After the Soviet incursion on Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter made the decision and told a group of United States athletes that the United States would boycott the Olympics that year.
