This Week in History: Feb. 10 – Feb. 14

On February 10, 1763, The French and Indian war was brought to an end by the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The war had been going on for almost nine years, and it is estimated that 5,000 people lost their lives in battle. The signing of this treaty didn’t just affect the United States, but also Europe, Central America, the West African coast, India, and the Philippines.

Let’s skip ahead a few years, shall we? On February 11, 1795, the first official state University opened and was called The University of North Carolina. It is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is the first public state University to be founded. The university’s strongest fields of study are Medicine and Law, though there are several others. The 11th president of the United States, James Polk, graduated from the University of North Carolina, as well as basketball star Michael Jordan, and TV show star Andy Griffith.

Last but not least, on February 13, 1811, President James Madison prohibited trade with Great Britain for the third time in four years. Could you imagine if we weren’t allowed to import goods from Britain today? We would have a shortage of gasoline at BP (British Petroleum) gas stations, some cars, important machinery in factories. It would definitely have a sizeable impact on our economy.
