October 14 – 18 in History

History to me is a very cool subject to learn. It is the story of life before us and the sequence of events that helped form the way society works today, but most importantly, it is a lesson of the successes and failures of humans before us. As Edmund Burke once said, “Those who do not know history are destined to repeat it.” That is proven to be true, and it is one of the many reasons why one should be familiar with history.

Tons of interesting events took place this week long before our time. On October 14, 1986, award winning author Elie Wiesel graciously accepted a Nobel Peace Prize for his works. For those of you not familiar with Wiesel, he was an Auschwitz Death Camp survivor, and, if you ever have the time, I highly recommend reading his book “Night”. It is a memoir of his life inside the camp, and gives a chillingly fascinating insight to what went on inside Nazi Concentration Camps.

Stepping back a few decades to October 16, 1923, the Disney Brothers Cartoon studio was founded in the back of a tiny office in Los Angeles. It was in this office that Walt Disney and his brother, Roy, created short, animated films, which they called “The Alice Comedies”. Those little animations were the start of the well-known Disney foundation that we all know and love today. It is mind-boggling how something running out of the back of a tiny building, seeming so irrelevant and comical, turned into a world-wide phenomenon!

If you have an interest in history, or enjoy playing games, watching movies, hanging out with awesome people of mutual interests, and doing service projects, the history club is definitely something you should consider. It is a lot of fun, and we would love for you to join! After all, if you don’t know history, you’re doomed to repeat it, right?
