Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Review

The Harry Potter franchise spin-off that is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens our eyes to the magical world that exists within the book written by J.K. Rowling. Traveling from England in the 1920’s with only his oxymoronic briefcase (it is anything but brief inside), Newt Scamander, portrayed by Eddie Redmayne, enters a universe inside itself: New York City. Eager to write a book on his adopted creatures, Scamander travels the city in search of inspiration. But after a stir-up with no-maj Jacob Kowalski (Dan Folger) and accidentally exposing his magical powers and fantastic beasts, they find themselves in trouble with the Magical Congress/Macusa. After being caught by Macusa employee Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterson) and her bachelorette sister, he feels as if hopes are lost. But little did Scamander know that the seemingly-cheery city was filled with vast horror. Someone, or something, has been destroying homes, architecture, and even lives. The four group up to defend the city despite the difficulties that may arise.

In my honest and personal opinion, this movie deserves a 10/10. While I am not a “Potterhead” or a huge fan of the Harry Potter literature and films prior, this movie has ultimately changed my opinion. Using movie magic, impressive skills depicted by the actors, and an enchanting storyline, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is quite possibly one of the best and most entertaining movies I have seen in awhile.

I would absolutely, wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone, even if said person doesn’t particularly enjoy Harry Potter, adventure movies, or even film in general. It was entertaining, thought-provoking, and all while still remaining as an excellent prequel to the original Harry Potter films.
