Majora’s Mask 3D Review

Do you like adventures and puzzles? Do you have a 3DS? Most importantly, do you like stress and confusion? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Majora’s Mask 3D is a must play. This game may share its title with the original Majora’s Mask from the Nintendo 64, but it has been remade for the Nintendo 3DS. Majora’s Mask is known amongst gamers for being one of the most frustrating and intimidating games in the series. After playing Majora’s Mask 3D, I must say that this game lives up to its expectations.

To be honest I am not too far in the game, but I have played enough to form an opinion. Majora’s Mask plays like most Legend of Zelda games, you control Link and use your sword, shield, bow, and an assortment of other gear as you clear dungeons, defeating enemies, and solving puzzles along the way. Some of these puzzles are no-brainers while other puzzles make you want to smash some clay pots. Majora’s Mask’s story is very different from other games in the series, it takes a much darker tone as Link journeys through the mysterious land of Termina.

One of the strangest and frustrating features of Majora’s Mask is the moon and the infamous 3-Day Cycle. The moon is going to fall on Termina and you only have 3 days in the game to stop it. There is so much that needs to be done to prevent the moon from falling. This is where the frustration comes in, I was always worrying if I have enough time to clear a dungeon, do this, talk to that person, and get this item, before the moon falls. Luckily, Link is equipped with the Ocarina of Time which allows you to turn back time to the Dawn of the First Day. Seventy-hours in Majora’s Mask is about 54 minutes of actual time. Since there is a lot to do in order to complete the game, things can get confusing. In order to keep track of current and completed quests and events, Majora’s Mask has the really, really useful Bomber’s Notebook. Using this and the Ocarina of Time I have been able to keep myself focused on what needs to be done in each 3-Day Cycle. Moving on to presentation, Majora’s Mask 3D’s low-definition graphics look great on the 3DS and the 3D effects are well done. That basically sums up everything I can say about Majora’s Mask 3D. I can’t compare Majora’s Mask 3D to the Nintendo 64 version because I have not played that.

Ultimately, Majora’s Mask 3D is one of the best games for the 3DS and you should play it. I especially recommend it if you’ve never played the original Majora’s Mask. Legend of Zelda fans will feel right at home with Majora’s Mask 3D, but newer fans of the series will find that Majora’s Mask may not be right for them. If you have never played a Legend of Zelda game but own a 3DS, I do NOT recommend starting out with Majora’s Mask. To get a feel of the series you should play A Link Between Worlds and Ocarina of Time 3D, both of which are really great games. Also, the Nintendo eShop also has several old Legend of Zelda games available.
